Obituary for Gerald Macey Beach

Gerald Macey Beach (Gerry), 92, passed away peacefully with his wife at his side on January 23, 2017, at Evergreen House in North Vancouver, B.C. Gerry was born and spent his childhood in Regina, Saskatchewan, and as his career evolved moved to Weyburn and Calgary then Vancouver. He is survived by his loving wife Vivian, children Joanne (Terry), Tom (Lucia), Paul, Susan (Phil), 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Predeceased were brother George and son Jeffrey. Gerry served in the RCAF during WWII, stationed in Regina, Vancouver, Victoria area and Port Hardy. Post-war he became a Regina firefighter and then Fire Chief of Weyburn, Saskatchewan, maintaining ties with fire chiefs across Canada afterwards. This led naturally into 32 years in the safety industry with Mine Safety Appliances, attaining top national salesman status for many years, finishing his time as Western Canada Sales Manager. In retirement he fulfilled his long-time vow to serve as a Commissionaire but was soon called upon to fill in as acting head of fire and safety for Lion’s Gate Hospital in North Vancouver. He was active in service clubs including the Kinsmen and the Rotary Club, with a term in the latter as President of the Lion’s Gate branch. He and Vivian greatly enjoyed their retirement years with travel including nearly-annual Hawaiian vacations as well as Mediterranean and Caribbean cruises. Vivian was devoted to Gerry’s care, giving him several extra quality years that he would not have had without her. Gerry was to the core kind, gentle and sincere, with a gift for conversation and making people laugh. He loved children, did a great Donald Duck imitation and was an expert tickler. He will be missed and warmly remembered. The family is grateful to the staff at Evergreen House and for those who wish to, donations may be directed there, through the Lion’s Gate Hospital Foundation, or to a charity of choice.
