Obituary for Randy Scott Fraser

Randy passed away peacefully and unexpectedly in his home in North Vancouver at the young age of 53 yrs.

Randy's life was focused on the North Shore. He grew up in the Eagle Harbour area of West Vancouver where he attended Eagle Harbour Elementary School a few blocks away and then West Van Secondary School and post-secondary courses. During his childhood, he loved coming home for tea and a snack with his Mom and sister after school, being in Cub Scouts where his father supported and accompanied him on outdoor adventure getaways, family boating trips most weekends, and numerous family holidays to Hawaii.

He had a strong work ethic starting when he was young. His first real job was a newspaper carrier in his neighbourhood and from that he branched out to work around the water like his father at Fraser’s Marine Service, then Ted Peck's local fishing tour boats, and then Thunderbird Marina where he worked for over 35 years. He was always there to lend a hand and ensure all was okay throughout the marina. In addition to his regular job there, he also had his own boat cleaning business - no job was too small or too large. He loved his work and was a fixture and lifeline to the marina – it was his ‘home away from home’. The marina and people he worked with were his anchor and brought him joy. They were part of his family and supported him in so many ways.

Randy always made time for people regardless of how much he needed to get done day in and day out. Randy's warm smile and wit was always refreshing to see. He had a love for stories and chatting. He was incredibly thoughtful, caring, and giving. He was quick to lend a hand and was a devoted son who looked after his parents. Randy loved his grandparents when they were alive and older people in general - at a young age he could be found sitting chatting to much older people and looking completely at peace.

Randy was a loving husband and father. He was blessed with three sons (Scott, Anthony and Brandon) all close in age whom he loved immensely and worked hard to look after. His boys were the most special treasures to him - they had been through so much together and they filled his heart with love. When they were boys, the could often be seen at the marina with Randy in the summer helping on the job.

Randy met Shirley Watson, his wife, in 2000 and married her in 2006. They shared many interests together including shopping, yard sales, garage sales, casino trips and craft fairs. He would take Shirley on trips to the states and usually came home with a carload of great finds and hopefully more money than he left with. His latest trip being to Nova Scotia. He would always be on the lookout for something that would warm someone’s heart or bring joy. He collected a variety of items which were all special to him.

Randy’s family was very important to him and he loved having everyone together. He would have regular gatherings with his wife, sons, parents, and sister for every occasion. Christmas was his favourite time of year. He would start planning in January, looking for the ideal gifts for friends and loved ones or decorations for his home.

Randy had a love for animals big and small. Cats always made him smile he had many that he looked after over the years. Recently, he looked after a ‘pet’ crow that was orphaned, feeding it and talking to it until they soon became friends.

Randy is survived by his wife Shirley; sons Scott, Anthony and Brandon - North Vancouver; parents Roderick 'Rod' and Kathy (Kean) Fraser – West Vancouver; sister Lisa and brother-in-law Peter O’Dwyer – North Vancouver; brother-in-law Jim and Paul from West Kelowna, sister-in-law Pam Heisler and Carmen - Halifax; and aunts Gertrude 'Tink' Fraser - Nanaimo and Gwen (Kean) Pecaric - Burnaby. He is predeceased by step granddaughters Tiffany and Tara; survived by his stepchildren Diahann Veinot (Todd) - Bridgewater, Stacey Mitchell (Terry Roberts) - Bridgewater, Ben and Minh Mitchell - Calgary; step grandchildren Matthew, Nick, Dion (Samantha) Chase & Alicia (Alex) Emond & Ashton Blagdon; great grandchildren Alexis, Adrian, Addelyn, Abigail Chase, Brooklyn and Brayden Emond.

There are so many people, friends and family that Randy came in contact with in his life who have made his life entertaining and special. His kind soul and will be missed by so many. Randy was the most loving, giving, selfless man always willing to lend a hand. It was such a treasure to have him in each of our lives. We will love you forever Randy!
