Obituary for Ann "Una" O'Neill
O’Neill, Ann (Una). June 15, 1930-Jan 10, 2018. Predeceased by her parents Mary and Joseph, sisters Patricia, Sheila and Peggy & brother Jim. She is survived by brother Joe, long-time friend Bridget and seventeen nieces and nephews.
The eldest of 6 children, Una was born in the Falls Road area of Belfast, Northern Ireland and was educated at St. Catherine’s Dominican School and Ft. William Dominican College. She worked for the Northern Ireland Government in the Ministry of Agriculture. She immigrated to Vancouver with her friend Peggy Coburn RIP and sister Patricia Penk RIP in the late 50’s.
Shortly after arriving in Vancouver she went to work with Children’s Aid and loved her job and the people she worked with. She retired in 1988.
Una gave of herself freely and lovingly to everyone she met, especially her nieces and nephews. We have all learned from her. She was a story teller (no embellishments at all!), an avid skier, an organizer, a list-maker. She loved cycling, sailing & hiking everywhere from the Mourne Mountains in Ireland to the Rocky Mountains in Canada. She loved to travel. She was a member of the Schussboomers Catholic Ski Club and served as a National Ski Patroller for over 20 years. She was awarded the Purple Heart for saving the life of an injured skier. Una was a faithful parishioner for 35+ years at OLPH in Vancouver. But none of this describes her quick, infectious laugh; her passion for life; the way she stood up for people and things she believed in; her happy, social nature; her devotion to her family; the way she filled a room with her beautiful personality.
Una the Explorer - collecter - joke teller - giver of love and an inspiration. Your influence on our lives will never leave us. RIP.
Funeral to be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, Vancouver; Thursday, January 18th, 11am. Reception to follow.
